What makes Conrad’s Vodka Smooth, Not Sharp

The Discipline of Texture:

What makes vodka smooth? To many, texture is like the difference between fresh whipped cream and aerosol cream. Both are cream, but one feels rich and silky while the other quickly disappears.

Good olive oil coats your mouth softly. Great vodka should do the same.

A quality vodka should give a gentle warmth, not a harsh burn. It should never overpower what you mix it with. Instead, it should let the other flavours shine.

Why Texture Matters More Than Neutrality

Great vodka should arrive like velvet, not sandpaper.

As a Distiller texture is similar to the difference between fresh whipped cream and the aerosol version. Both are cream, but one feels rounded and integrated while the other simply disappears. A good extra virgin olive oil coats the palate softly. Great vodka should do the same.

A quality vodka should provide warmth, not harshness. It should never burn the back of the throat or overpower whatever it is mixed with.

The Irish Triple Pot Distillation Philosophy

Our philosophy comes from traditional Irish triple pot distillation

Conrad Vodka is triple pot distilled with heavy cuts to the heads and tails. We keep only the heart of the spirit. This middle section contains the cleanest and finest alcohol.

These cuts affect the way the vodka feels in your mouth more than most people realise.

Over the years, I experimented with four and five distillations and compared them with carbon filtration. I found very little difference after the third distillation. In fact, carbon filtering removed some of the mouthfeel and character I wanted to keep.

Marketing often tells us that more distillations mean better vodka. Experience taught me something different.

Why Time Is an Ingredient

Carbon filtering is faster and cheaper. Some producers can finish a vodka in a single day.

Our approach takes about 90 days.

Between each distillation, we allow the spirit to rest. This gives the alcohol and water time to settle and blend together naturally. That patience helps us make cleaner cuts during the next distillation and remove even more unwanted compounds.

There is always a difference between spirit straight off the still and spirit tasted a week later. Time allows the alcohol and water to come together properly.

Speed is the enemy of texture. Rushing the process means unwanted compounds can end up in the final spirit.

What Visitors Notice First

One of my favourite moments during tastings is letting visitors smell and taste spirit from the first distillation.

They quickly notice the chemical smell and the harsh burn on the back of the throat.

Then they taste the finished Conrad Vodka.

Suddenly, they discover light floral aromas, soft fruit notes, and a completely different texture. The harshness is gone. That moment explains more than any technical description ever could.

The judges at the London Spirits Competition captured it beautifully: “Bright, fresh aromas of peach and vanilla lead to a sweet, smooth palate with milky caramel notes and a warm, lightly spiced finish.”

All Vodkas Have Character

Many people believe vodka should have no character. I disagree.

People with a trained palate can often pick up a bread-like note in grain vodkas or a slight sweetness in spirits made from sugar.

Some commercial vodkas even use glycerine and other additives to make the spirit seem smoother and better mouth feel

I believe great vodka does not need tricks.

What People Misunderstand About Smooth Vodka

Smoothness is not about removing everything.

Great vodka should never burn the back of the throat. It should provide a pleasant warmth and never change the flavour of the drink you mix it with.

At Conrad Distillery, we make our vodka from wine. It has its own gentle character, but it never gets in the way.

That balance is what I believe great vodka should achieve.

The Discipline Behind Smoothness

Texture isn’t created by marketing claims or extra filtration.

It comes from patience, heavy heart cuts and resting between distillations.

And it comes from understanding that making exceptional vodka isn’t about how quickly you can finish it. It is about having the discipline to wait.

Because in distilling, as in life, the softest things often require the greatest patience.
